One of the worlds great races is wrapping up - the Dakar rally. Sadly, I find that us Americans are woefully unaware of this classic, especially now that it's taking place in our hemisphere. (The Dakar Rally historically was from Paris to Dakar - a bulk of the race going through the Sahara Desert. Several years ago because of terrorist threats and security concerns, the race moved to South America. This years race went through Argentina, Chile and Peru).

Happily this year in addition to the daily video updates on the internet, the new NBC sports network has been giving 30min daily updates - Thank You!

So whether you are a Dakar fan or never heard of it, these photos are great and give a great taste of the 8000 mile race.

Saw a semi-load of Christmas trees on the highway today. Can a Christmas tree stay reasonably fresh for two plus months? I don't know diddly about Christmas tree farming, but this doesn't seem right does it? At least its a reason why our tree starts shedding as soon as we bring it home.

Check out this 'Beneath the Streets of Arlington Heights' gallery at the Daily Herald website. Despite shows like 'Dirty Jobs', I forget (and assume others do too) that there is a labyrinth of tunnels beneath the streets. Bet it smells real good down there.

The National Wildlife Federation used one of my butterfly/milkweed photos in a story about attracting butterflies to your yard. Since I get so much joy about attracting butterflies to our yard, it adds some extra pride that they chose my photo.

More vacation photos. This was the longest hike on our trip to Banff, Johnston Canyon. The first third of the canyon is supposed to be one of the most popular hikes in the park, which is to see the upper and lower waterfalls. It was as advertised, lots of folks coming in on buses for the easy part of the hike.

After the falls, there was only occasional hiker on the trail which continued up the canyon. The hike ends as you leave the canyon into a valley with a spectacular view and a group of colorful spring fed pools called 'the inkpots'. For us a challenging hike, as we're not used to the altitude, but worth the effort.

They are hands down the coolest scooters I've seen. I'd take one of these over a Vespa.

Spent two days in Los Angeles this past week as Inga had go there for work. It was my first trip to L.A., so I rented a car and just cruised the streets. My Ford Mustand rental and I covered a lot of ground: The Valley, Malibu, North Hollywood, Burbank, Downtown L.A. and the surrounding mountains.

I have to say I was charmed by L.A. The notorious traffic wasn't too bad by Chicago standards. Except for the tourist trap restaurant in Malibu, the food was excellent and of course the weather was stereotypically beautiful. Left a lot on the table for a return trip sometime in the future.

Was on the roof doing some maintenance and thought I'd take a pic of the solar attic fan we had put in. The fan as well as the light shingles have made a huge difference in keeping the second floor cool.
