Slots or Not
The Arlington Heights Chamber of Commerce wants slots. The trustees and mayor don't want slots. I'm all for taking a suckers money. Arlington Park is too big a venue to leave closed most of the year.

Trader Joe's Bare Leg Extravaganza
Television trucks will be parking outside Trader Joe's before you know it. Over the weekend the Daily Herald and today WBBM Newsradio 780 covered a story about a shorts wearing contest at the store. At the beginning of the fall, a group of employees bet each other to see who could wear shorts the longest into the winter. With the recent single digit temperatures, there are four short wearing employees left and the local media has gotten a whiff of a story.
I predict that the shorts wearing contest will go into next winter unless they take my unsolicited advice - make the length of the shorts incrementally shorter over time. Stocking produce in hot pants - oh the crowds they would draw.

WTF Mayo
Lots to see on the shelves of Garden Fresh Market including this unpronounceable brand of mayonnaise.
Wow! Is this the Eastern European equivalent Darkie Toothpaste? Maybe there is a cultural reference I'm missing, but these jars stopped me in my tracks. Maybe this spicy mayo would go good on this yummy looking canned roast beef. With a name like 'Babushka's Recipe', it's gotta be good!

Protestors
Maybe Rep. Kirk was in the area or they were just taking advantage of a busy intersection, but there were anti-war protestors on the corner of Arlington Heights Road and Northwest Highway late yesterday afternoon. I was coming back from a solo 'photo excursion' in Des Plaines and the light was fading, so I snapped a couple shots from the driver's seat.

Flamingo and Fuego
Just finished watching 'Check, Please!' on WTTW-TV (not sure if it was new or a re-run) where they gave Flamingo in Mount Prospect a very favorable review. I had been tempted to pop-in as it looks inviting (it's a block away from ChoDang Tofu), so now it is towards the top of my list of restaurants to try. Unfortunately, they are now going to have the 'Check, Please!' wave of diners filling the restaurant for a couple of weeks. I'll have to bide my time.
Seeing Flamingo reminded me about something I was meaning to say about Fuego in Downtown Arlington Heights, since the holidays. I blogged a long time ago after it first opened, that I wasn't super impressed. Fate has pulled me back into Fuego a few times recently, and I want to officially give it an upgrade from my original blah opinion. My recent meals have charmed me especially a tilapia and jicama special they had on Christmas Eve that knocked my socks off. I don't know if anything changed with them or me, but It's on my fave restaurants list now.

Bluejuice - Vitriol
My blogging New Year is starting off with a whimper.
Good news with my New Years resolution so far. The first week of the 2008 had me doing 5 yoga sessions, so I'm starting the year on track. Seven times a week will take building up as five times is wearing me out.
This is from the holidays - a music video via the site of artist Ben Templesmith in Australia. His video of the weekend turned me on to the band Bluejuice and their incredibly catchy song - Vitriol. I was so hooked that I got the album (which I was only able to find on I-Tunes). Vitriol is still in heavy rotation. Here's the video - there is a little non-music skit before the song. Hope you like it.

Got In People Magazine
If you have the Holiday 2007 issue of People Extra, you'll see this on page 48:
And if you look at the tiny - bordering on microscopic - credits in the margin, you'll see my name. Someone from People saw the dolphin photo on Flickr and asked if they could use it in their holiday issue. Unfortunately, they said they didn't have any money in the budget to pay me (cough bull$%!t cough). So no, I didn't make any money but a magazine chose one of my photos out of the blue to print -- so that's something.

Happy 2008 everyone.
I guess this is the end of my impromptu holiday hiatus. We were in town, but Inga had the last few weeks of the year off, so we did lots-o-stuff together. Spent most of my computer time on a new work venture that I am excited about for 2008.
Usually, I poo-poo New Years resolutions, but I do have one this year - do more yoga. My goal is to working up to practicing 5-7 times a week than the current 2-3 (3x a week is currently a very rare occurrence).
Cheers!
