Philadelphia Express
Hi. Just got back from a very quick trip with Inga to Philadelphia. She was there on business, so I spent yesterday and this morning walking around Philly taking photos. Saw the touristy things (thankfully you can see the Liberty Bell from the outside so I didn't have to subject myself to the tour) and some not touristy things. Enough of a visit to get a taste and say I'd been there. The 'Old Town' was much hipper than the cheap guidebook led me to believe. Turned out to be my favorite neighborhood and subsequently had the least amount of sewer and steam vent smell. No cheesesteaks (still not eating red meat) but we did have an excellent dinner at Vietnam in Chinatown and an egg and cheese filled crepe at a Reading Terminal Market.
Time to get back into the swing of things and glad to be back. I do have several large knots in my right calf from all the walking so I guess I did bring home a souvenir besides the photo.

Beaner's To Biggby
I was always curious about the name choice of Beaner's Coffee since they moved into the area. Watch one episode of Mind Of Mencia and you'll know that 'Beaner' is derogatory slang for Hispanics - an odd choice to name your coffee house. On the other hand, they are an established, fairly large chain, so you figure they made peace with their name choice. (Anyone remember the restaurant chain, Sambo's?)
Maybe word about their name double-entendre took a while to reach Beaner's East Lansing Michigan headquarters as the Daily Herald says they are changing their name to Biggby Coffee. If they want to keep spreading around the U.S., it's a good call. Our Arlington Heights location should have it's new name by the end of January.

Making Octopus Pie
If you aren't reading web comic Octopus Pie, why not? Seriously, it's worth checking out.
Octopus Pie creator, Meredith Gran put together a mesmerizing time-lapse video of her putting together one of the strips. It's a 'wow!' video plus it shows how much work goes into each installment. (BTW - If you like the background music like I do, it's Sweet Spot by The Fiery Furnaces

Look At Those Fancy Cars
If you love cars (or hanging out with snooty rich people) the Barrington Concours D'Elegance was the place to be. Perfect weather for walking around the Markay Country Club and checking out some incredible cars.
There was something for everyone - race cars, micro cars, classic American, European dream cars and everything in between (though nothing for the hot-rod or tuner crowd, but that's not what a Concours D'Elegance is about).
I started a Flickr set of my photos from the show. Started with the race cars with much more to follow in the coming days. I'll most likely post some highlights here too.

I mentioned a few weeks ago that Foo was very sick. Despite the long odds for her to recover, she pulled through her ordeal. Lots of thanks to the doctors, nurses and techs at March Animal Hospital for going the extra mile to help Foo pull through.
Foo is back to her normal routine, though her brothers seem to be bothering her less. Case in point, the photo below where her and Lester share a moment of détente and a basement window.
