Man Makes Chicken With Pears
Here's a video of a man sharing his recipe for chicken with pears. BTW - the man sharing the recipe happens to be Christopher Walken.

Jackie Stewart Loses His Credibility In 30 Seconds
A better title might be 'Jackie Stewart Sells Out'. It's as believable as a commercial touting the fuel economy of a Hummer.

UPDATE - 8/30/07 - Someone didn't take kindly to the alteration. Walked by the sign today and it was almost completely removed.
.

I think this is more a suggestion on how a racier name might of brought in more customers than vandalism. Coral Paradise has closed it's doors, if you haven't noticed.

Camping At Home - 50+ Hour Power Outage
Inga said several times during the 50+ hours we went without electricity that it was kind of like camping (except for the hot showers, toilet, nice bed, etc). Well, I've never been camping and any desire I might have had to try, is very very dead.
So we are recovering from the summer storm of 2007. Like way too many people, we lost power around 3:30 - 4 p.m. on Thursday and got it back this evening around 9 p.m., so that's about 53 hours. We had some water in the basement because of the sump pump not having a battery backup (have to move that up the home improvement list). No damage done with the water, except for the carpet tiles I put in my work area. I put carpet tiles down for that reason - figured if we ever got water in the basement, it would be easy to replace the damaged section. The next morning one of the neighbors let us plug into their generator, so the pump got back to work and things dried out.
Come to think of it, there is a causality - the food in the fridge. There was no meat (Inga's a vegetarian and I don't eat meat at home) and I mostly shop for groceries as needed so it's not so bad. I can still here generators in the distance, so there are plenty of people still slogging around in the dark. We're thankful that we got off light and hope everyone gets life back to normal ASAP.
But this storm and outage reminded me how much I love electricity...and the internet...and computers...mp3s...digital photography...etc...etc...etc...

Wizard World - Chicago 2007
My friend Mark asked if I would be interested in going to Wizard World this year. I hadn't been to a comic convention since they called it the Chicago Comic-con some double digit years ago. I knew the shows had changed a lot, so I decided to tag along.
It was one of those rare events in my life where I liked the current version more than the idealized versions from my memories. Attendees are having a lot more fun with Wizard World than the shows of my younger years. It's now more a celebration of pop-culture geekdom while still preserving the all-important opportunity to spend way too much money. The biggest change for me, was the number of women attending the show. This wasn't the fat, sweaty sausage-fest that I remembered. The popularity of anime and the new hipness of geek culture has really pulled the ladies in, and that is a very good thing. Don't get me wrong, there were still plenty of guys at the show that looked to be making their first trip out of their parents basement this year - though the hygiene was better.
So I took lots of photos at the show, mostly of people in costumes (another new feature to me). Several times, someone in a costume would see the camera and just stop to get their picture taken - lots of pride in their costume creations.
Here are some of the more popular photos I took as judged by the number of Flickr views they got this week (not including this photo I posted earlier in the week). Not surprisingly, the female costumes are the most popular.
This photo was the most popular by a landslide. Fanboys can't pass up Princess Leia in a slave bikini.
Bondage Spiderman? I bet that costume doesn't breath well...

Mark meets the Suicide Girls.
The gentleman dressed as Plastic Man saw my photo of him on Flickr and said 'hello'.
Under the guise of his alter-ego J.R., he posted his show photos and had an interesting 'how-to' on how he put his costume together
The rest of the my photos from the show can be seen on Flickr.
I had a lot of fun at Wizard World. Barring unforeseen commitments, I think I'll be back next year.

Follow-up - Rough Day In A.H.
Couldn't find anything in the news or police blotter about Blockbuster being robbed. I'll keep looking for something or ask my friend to talk to his clerk/friend next time he goes in.
As expected, the commotion at the train station was a man vs. train collision. A local homeless man crossed under the wire fences that separate the tracks and was blind-sided by a 'semi-express' train, killing him instantly.

Tomorrow Music Orchestra @ Martyrs' - August 25th
With the summer drawing to a sweaty conclusion; Tomorrow Music Orchestra returns to the stage at Martyrs' (3855 N. Lincoln Ave. Chicago) - Saturday, August 25th at 9 p.m. TMO will be sporting a 20+ member line-up for this performance which should be a epic live experience. Good thing Martyrs' has that big stage. It's a great place to kick back and listen to music. Try the empanadas.
Earlier in the day, Tomorrow Music Orchestra will be flexing their musical muscles live over the airwaves on WNUR - 89.3 FM, sometime in the 4 o'clock hour.
If you aren't familiar with their music, Tomorrow Music Orchestra mixes rock, classical, electronic, jazz, metal and funk in composed and improvised pieces. You can hear samples of their music on ears&eyes Records - where they have released two live albums - (Is it dated to say 'albums'? Guess I'm just old school that way.) or on the TMO MySpace page.
See you there.

Rough Day In A.H.
Looks like today was a rough day in downtown Arlington Heights.
A friend of mine stopped by the office this afternoon and said that he walked into the downtown Blockbuster Video right after it had been robbed. No info to pass along as the clerk was too shaken to say much...surprised they didn't close the store for a little while.
At rush hour, I can only assume that a pedestrian lost a race with a Metra train just outside the station. The police had the Vail St. crossing closed and had a wide area taped off with a full complement of emergency vehicles present. After yoga, things were still closed off. Lots of commuters walking around as trains looked to be backed up with delays.
Have to see what details pop up tomorrow.

The First Strawberry

Inga tried her green thumb at strawberries this year too - in pots just like the tomatoes. This little ripe strawberry was the first fruit of her labor. It looked a lot better than it tasted, unfortunately...

Foo is very sick, having had emergency surgery Sunday night. She's doing better, but is still far from being out of the woods. Her age is a big factor as she's getting pretty old (guessing 13-15 y.o. - Foo was a stray).
Foo's tail is paralyzed from her pre-adoption years so it tends to get in her way sometimes. The vet at the hospital gave Foo this festive tail wrap to keep her tail fur from out of the wound and incision. I think it's a beautiful accessory and Foo would too if she ever noticed it was there.

Posted by JB at 9:31 PM | PermalinkArlington Million
Chicagoist has a great, quick and to the point summation of the Arlington Million tomorrow.
Arlington Million, the largest annual stakes race in Illinois.Time for my annual blimp-watch!
Among the field is last year's winner, Tin Man, with 3-1 odds. The nine-year-old is looking to defend his title against this year's favorite, After Market. The favorite at 2-1 odds, After Market is trained by John Shirreffs, who also trained 2005 Kentucky Derby champ Giacomo.
For the first time, the winner of the Arlington Million — as well as the winners of the lower stakes Beverly D. and Secretariat races that will be run on Saturday — all win spots in the prestigious Breeders' Cup championship races on Oct. 27. While not a Triple Crown event, this added incentive should certainly help raise the profile of the Million.
For those who cannot make it out to Arlington, ABC will televise the Arlington Million from 3-5 p.m.
