Bye Bye Bovis

Alas, Bovis is gone. If there was a full sized sedan going slowly down Northwest Highway (more often than not driven by a man in a hat), odds are it was headed for the Bovis House.

Could You Tell?
Maybe you could tell by the photo on the last post that I have a new toy. It's a new 15" MacBook Pro and so far, I'm digging it. The Mac way of doing things is a little different, but so far so good. The Photo Booth feature might get more use than I thought. It's a pretty cool feature but then again who really wants to see more of my smiling face.

I never know what to say after I see a concert. Los Lobos last night at the Metropolis was great. You really can't go wrong with a concert there. In such an intimate venue with great acoustics, the artist would really have to have a bad night for the show to not be at least decent. The first half of the show was mainly traditional Hispanic music (mostly Mexican but at least one Venezuelan song). After the intermission, they switched more into rock mode and hammered out a rousing version of 'Cinnamon Girl'. On their encore, all the women who wanted were pulled on stage to dance with the band
After the show, Los Lobos stuck around to sign autographs and take photos with fans. We didn't stick around for that, but I did get a cool toque and t-shirt.

Timing Is Everything
I was going to do a post about a photo of mine being the 'Daily Photo' on the Chicago Public Radio - WBEZ 91.5 website today. Unfortunately, I got a note that they had to take my photo down, of the Air India 747 that I posted a few days ago, because there is a news story about a plane making an emergency landing at O'Hare this morning. They didn't want there to be confusion between the news story and my photo, so they took my photo down.
Oh well, timing is everything. No hard feelings WBEZ (and Andrew)!

Campaign signs have sprouted up all over town signaling the arrival of local election season. Polls will open on April 17th for electing Arlington Heights trustee, school, park, library and township boards.
I'm especially interested in the Village Trustee elections (as there is a certain current nasally -voiced trustee that I think needs to go). The Daily Herald and Arlington Heights Memorial Library have put together an informational video that introduces the candidates for Arlington Heights Trustee. Each candidate gets one minute to introduce themselves and give a quick pitch on why you should vote for them. Please watch and of course, vote too.
Recorded at the Arlington Heights Memorial Library.

Bovis House Meets The Wrecking Ball
Drove down Northwest Highway towards the end of the afternoon and saw a fence surrounding the closed Bovis House restaurant. As I pulled closer, I saw that the back quarter of the restaurant was already leveled. Bye bye Bovis House. I assumed that someone would move in an try to make a go of it, but the parking is not all that great there. Several times I saw vehicles from the Accent Cafe (in Des Plaines I believe) in the lot and thought they might be interested in a new location.
My guess is that the space stays vacant for awhile. Then again, maybe they'll try to wedge some sort of housing in the space.

London - Waiting At O'Hare
The official start of the London vacation photos.
It was my first time at O'Hare Terminal 5 - The International Terminal; where all the exotic airlines hang out. While the British Airways plane we took was smartly attired, it didn't have the style and flair of this Air India 747. Painting the port hole windows makes all the difference.

Enter - A Piano Bar
Catching up on a weeks worth of email and RSS feeds and my body is still trying to get into synch with Central Standard Time.
This little local news nugget was in the pile. I've heard rumors of a piano bar coming to downtown Arlington Heights for a while. Turns out those rumors are true as the village board approved plans for the Big Shots Restaurant and Piano Lounge in the space formerly occupied by The Boiler Room (2 S. Vail Ave). Hope they can make that space work out, as it seems like a cool spot for a little music venue.

The Other Side Of The Pond
So, why no posts this week? London! Inga and I flew to London U.K. for vacation and just got back this afternoon.
We had a great time, though we're a little beat up by the lousy Dollar to Pound conversion rate. It was my first time outside of North America, so it was an super-special trip for me and exceeded expectations. I took over 700 photos (lots of double/triples/quadruples though) so as I post photos, I'll recap the trip.
We're tired now. Posts will start again tomorrow.

Ray!
I heard the about the song 'I'm Gonna Whip Somebody's Ass' by a person only known as Ray on 'The Show with ZeFrank'. If you haven't heard the song, it was recorded by a man named Ray for his daughter who was having a hard time at her job. He told his daughter to sing the song to herself whenever she got frustrated at work. The clip made it's way around the internet and to radio stations across the U.S. with only a few people knowing who Ray actually was.
Sports Racers (aka fans) of 'The Show with ZeFrank' started remixing the clip into full length songs and eventually a video was made. Ze put out the call to find Ray who was found to be a Minister in St.Louis. Ze traveled to meet Ray in St.Louis and give him copies of the remixes and video. The clip below is Ze's meeting/interview with Ray (or you can go to The Show to see it). Ray is seems like a great guy with an equally great story. Check out the video...
