2007 SXSW Showcasing Artists Sampler Is Out!
Time to fire up your favorite torrent app! The annual release of the SXSW Showcasing Artists Sampler is available for download via BitTorrent. 739 songs - over 3 GB of free and legal music!
As I've mentioned before on this site and to anyone who will listen; this is the single best opportunity to discover a slew of new music and give your music library a shot in the arm. Though rock based, no musical genre is left untouched (except for maybe classical) so there is something for everyone.

I Am The Road Warrior
Maybe I missed my calling to be a long haul trucker. Thursday and Friday I was on the road - Chicago to Baltimore on Thursday, Baltimore to Chicago on Friday - and truth be told, it wasn't all that bad. I'm a bit tired, but no more so than after a late night gaming session.
I went to help a friend of mine, who had to get a car to Baltimore at the last minute, so it could be put on a ship to Europe. While probably not the sanest plan in the world, instead of paying last minute airfare to get back home, we took two cars to Baltimore and drove together on the way back.
When I left, I decided to put myself completely in the digitized hands of the car's navigation system (his car - not mine). What neither of us realized was that the navigation system was set to not use toll roads which put my route a bit off the beaten path. It was a great mistake as the scenic route took me into some parts of the country I'd never been to, mainly West Virginia and Western Maryland. After a few hours of driving through a blizzard in the mountains, I called it quits after 13 hours of driving outside of Cumberland, Maryland.
My friend didn't leave Chicago until after 8 pm. He drove all night to get to the Baltimore docks in the morning where we eventually met up. The port terminal was an awe inspiring picture of globalization at work. Lots full of Japanese, Korean, Swedish and German cars and more American made tractors, combines, earth movers and cranes then I had ever seen in one place. You forget how much stuff is still made here until you yards full of all this heavy equipment.
We had originally planned on staying in Baltimore for a little while to check out Chesapeake Bay and the ships before heading home. We changed our minds after getting flash-frozen by the strong winds coming in from the ocean and my friend was starting to show the ill-effects of staying up for 30 straight hours. So we finished our business and headed home. I ended up driving the entire stretch back to Chicago myself because the closer we got to home, the more my friend looked like an extra in a George Romero movie. After dropping him off in the city and getting my car, I made it home around 1:45 a.m.
I'm glad to be back and feeling empowered having never made a road trip this long before and it going so well. I'm ready to do it again...but not now. I need a nap.

CoCo Key Cold Snap
The deep cold snap shut down the new Coco Key water park for a few days. The park was shut down Saturday through Wednesday afternoon as the heating system had trouble keeping 195,000 gallons of water at a toasty 84 degrees. Things are back up and running. Considering that the temps barely got above zero for a few day, keeping a giant water park balmy is an HVAC marvel.

Domesticated Or Dull?
I can't decide if my excitement over Trader Joe's now carrying high-efficiency laundry detergent means that I've become completely domesticated or a really dull person. It is exciting though!

It's cold...damn cold. It's the season for nesting and outside of the snow sculpting competition this weekend, there isn't much going on.
Events are starting to pop up for the spring like the Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention at the Sheraton Chicago Northwest (Arlington Park Sheraton) on May 4-6. Hopefully it will be a rainy weekend, because I wouldn't mind checking out the old pulp movies especially the silent Call of Cthulhu film.
If it's sunny and warm, it will be hard to get my nerd on though. What I wouldn't give for a day in the high 60's right now.

Disappointment
Just some quick thoughts before I go to bed:
The game started off so well for the Bears with Hester's kickoff touchdown return. I thought for sure that the good Bears vibes I'd been feeling all day we're for real. Turn's out it was just gas.
Focusing on the positive, the evening wasn't a total loss. Got to spend some quality time with family and friends, yell at the TV and had some incredible food from Asian Bistro.
If there is a brightside to losing the Superbowl, it's listening to the die-hard Bears fans vent their spleens on sports radio. This is pure radio gold and will be going on all week if not longer. As I scribble out this meager post, I'm listening to the Doug Buffone and Ed O'Bradovich post game show on WSCR and tempers are flaring off the charts. If they and the fans could make personel moves tonight, the coaching staff and all the offensive would get their walking papers tonight. If windows weren't frozen shut across Chicagoland, there might be some jumpers.
I wonder if you can get any good deals on Bears merchandise tomorrow? Maybe when the temperature gets above single digits I'll go back to Dick's.and check out the cool but way-too expensive for my blood hoodies they had before the game.
Oh well, life goes on. It just seems a little colder outside and the forecast tomorrow says the high will be 1 degree.
