That's Gotta Hurt
Don't click this link, unless you want to see what happens when a judge in a javelin competition gets distracted from the event.
C'mon, you always imagine something like this happening when you see Javelin events, don't you. Maybe it's just me...

Posted by JB at 11:12 PM | PermalinkInga's Emergency Landing

If you look real close (squint and get close to the screen), you can see Inga sitting in a window of this plane, sipping a glass of champagne and waving to the camera. Really, Inga is sitting in the plane in this photo (though without the champagne).
Inga just got back from a business trip to Salt Lake City. On her way to SLC, a child on the flight was having difficulty breathing so they had to make an emergency landing in North Platte, Nebraska. The North Platte Regional Airport (the first lighted air field in the U.S!), usually only handles a few turboprop flights a day to Denver, but apparently the runway was designed to handle planes as large as a 747 for emergencies such as this. A television news crew was waiting along with the ambulance and took the above picture (as well as posting a story on their website and probably showing the tape on the evening news). The airport did not have any staff available to get the luggage of the sick child's family off the plane, so a passenger volunteered and climbed into the luggage hold to retrieve their bags. An hour and a half later, after refueling and filing a new flight plan, they were back on their way.
Inga wanted to pass along that she thought the American Airlines crew did a great job and was very impressed with how they handled the emergency. There was no word from the flight crew or from the news report on how the child was doing.

Wired blog, '27 B Stroke 6' has a post today about a study that found that TrustE certified sites are twice as likely to spam you or install spyware than the general website population.
Ben Edelman, a researcher working on his Ph.D. in economics at Harvard, compared close to 1,000 TrustE certified sites to over 500,000 sites of a major ISP. Edelman found that 5.4% of Trust-E sites were untrustworthy compared to 2.5% of the baseline.

Oh No....Christmas
Not counting the catalogs with Christmas stuff that have already come in the mail, I had my first and way too early Christmas sighting today. Crews were putting up Christmas lights on the trees downtown on Northwest Highway.
It's September 25th and three whole months until Christmas...
Is it to late to buy my Halloween candy?
Bah Humbug.

Wayne's Pizza
I jumped on the computer to look up the number for Wayne's Pizza. According to their website, they have been making pizza since 1964. Wow! That's staying power; fending off the advances of local and national chains. According to the standards of Joe at the Cheap Date Show, that would qualify them as a 'dining tradition'.

I am completely mesmerized by Alex Itin's Infinite Buddha. Don't forget to play the audio files under the animation to complete the effect.

Tomorrow Music Orchestra CD Release Party TONIGHT!!
An announcement from the Tomorrow Music Orchestra:
The Tomorrow Music Orchestra is an ever-changing and evolving one-of-a-kind ensemble that plays only music written by its members. Gunnelpumper bassist, bandleader, principal composer-in-residence and de facto conductor Matthew Golombisky will lead the ensemble in a performance this evening to celebrate the release of our second CD, neon jesus garage, at Silvie's Lounge (1902 W. Irving Park). Lots of improvisation, group participation, and, well, it's just really cool. Sound good, too!

The 'Ghetto Latte'
The merits and evils of the 'ghetto 'latte' are being debated at the Starbucks Gossip blog. A 'ghetto latte' is where you order an Americano without the water and add lots and lots of half and half at the condiment counter to save buck. That's a new one on me. I'm a simple venti house blend guy myself.

The Cheap Date Show
Last week, I received an email 'Hello' from a fellow Arlington Heights blogger, Joe Lynn. Always good to hear from another blogger in the neighborhood.
Since then, I've become the latest fan of the Cheap Date Show podcast that he puts together with his girl-friend Lisa. As the name suggests, the podcast focuses on cheap eats in the Chicagoland area as well as fun things to do and other assorted tangents. Joe and Lisa sound like they're having a good time doing the show and in turn, makes the podcast fun to listen to.
I'm slowly making my way through the archives as they have been to a bunch of places I have been wanting to try. I've also been comparing their opinions of places that Inga and I have been to as well. So far, it seems like our dining tastes are pretty close. There's a list of restaurants that they've visited on their site so you can go straight to the episode with the place you are interested in. All in all - pretty cool.

Led Zeppelin Rules

On my way to the library, I saw that someone had written 'Led Zeppelin Rules' into the sidewalk (it was even done in a classic Zeppelinesque font). This section of sidewalk was pretty new, between 1 to 3 years old, not a relic from the 70s or 80s.
It got me wondering. Assuming that the graffiti writer was someone in the age range from a teen to early 20s; isn't there anyone more contemporary they would want to immortalize in cement? Don't get me wrong, I realize that Led Zeppelin is still popular, but are they still pulling in new young fans? Looking at this, I would guess that they are making in roads with at least some teens.
The flip-side is that this sidewalk graffiti was done by someone in their 30s or 40s (or 50s?) who still feels the need to profess that 'Led Zeppelin Rules' to the world, which is a very creepy thought...

Chicago Fire
As a trade-off for spending the afternoon at the botanic garden on Saturday, I got to choose what we did on Sunday. Being in a sports mood and with the Sox out of town it was slim pickings. Then I remembered that the Chicago Fire's season was still going and as luck would have it they were playing a home game.
The Chicago Fire moved into Toyota Park in Bridgeview this year. It's a decent facility with great sightlines, at least from where we were sitting.

Almost as entertaining as the game itself was 'Section 8' at one end of the field, where the die hard fans do the euro-style chants during the game and wave flags and such.

Inga took this photo. She thought it was funny that a woman would wear red satiny heels to a sporting event.

For the record the Fire beat the N.Y. Red Bulls 2-1. We passed the camera back and forth and took a bunch of snapshots which can be seen here.

"Give Me Your Money Or I'll Give You Cooties"
There was a robbery attempt at the Chase Bank at 43 E. Golf Road in Arlington Heights, albeit a poorly planned and executed one (registration required - use bugmenot). A man walked up to the drive-thru and passed a note through the tube to the teller. The note said the paper was infected with a 'bacterial virus' (which one is it, Jesse James?) and demanded cash. The teller panicked and the would be robber ran off. The fire department determined that the note was harmless.
