Video - Squirrel Attacks Deer

In the purpose of reminding all that squirrels are nature's ninjas, here is a video of a squirrel attacking a deer. (Warning - The clip was pulled from the incredibly lame America's Funniest Home Videos...)

Arlington Jockey Thrown - Goes To Hospital

Arlington Park Jockey, Eduardo Perez, was thrown off his horse Cats Jazzy on Monday. Cats Jazzy 'broke down' down the stretch and Perez was thrown. He was able to walk away from the accident, but asked to be taken to the hospital (Northwest Community).

I love Arlington Park and horse racing, but the sad reality is that not all horses are treated like Barbaro when they get injured. Barbaro is the exception to the rule since he is so valuable to stud even if he can't race. There is no word on Cats Jazzy, so... Well, lets not assume the worse. I'll keep searching for news on him.

Pat Robertson Steroid Shakes

There is a story by Clay Travis on CBS Sportsline that brings to light that televangelist and spiritual hitman, Pat Robertson, claims he can leg-press 2,000 pounds thanks to his 'age defying protein shake', (The recipe you can buy from Pat.) Never mind that Pat Robertson is 76 and the all-time Florida State record for leg-press is 1,335 lbs. (couldn't find any other leg press records) This shake must be bubbling with enough steroids and growth hormones to make Barry Bonds wince. If he's that strong, he can take down Hugo Chavez without God's help.

EPEAT - Certifying Green Computers

There is a new rating system for green-minded computer shoppers called EPEAT (Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool) that is similar to the Energy Star rating for appliances. As some of the factors going into the rating are product longevity and ease of upgrade, it is valuable rating even if you don't care about the green factor. Who wouldn't want a computer that would last longer and save some bucks?

The Arlington Heights Song

From the Daily Herald comes the story of 'The Arlington Heights Song'. Local musician and jingle writer, Roger Bain wrote the song in 2002 and passed it out to various village officials and merchants. The song resurfaced this year when the Arlington Heights Chamber of Commerce used it for their on hold music.

'The Arlington Heights Song' is corny and grating (what's the obsession with white teeth), but it is dangerously catchy. I never thought words 'Arlington Heights' would ever work in a song and you'll find yourself singing the chorus over and over whether you like it or not.

Hear it for yourself - 'The Arlington Heights Song' ...

One in Ten Thousand

Not being able to resist a game, I played the Google/DaVinci Code contest/promotion vehicle to the end. As luck would have it, I was one of the first 10,000 to finish the puzzles, which scored me this DaVinci Code schwag - a replica cryptex.

cryptex

It's metal and it does work. When you align the wheels to say 'grail' it opens up to reveal a compartment with a rolled up note from Google congratulating you on your success so far. On the 19th, the 10,000 cryptex winners get to compete for the Grand Prize (which is a ton of stuff too long to mention). The person who completes the puzzle the fastest wins. There are probably groups of people who have gotten together to pool their entries; figuring out the puzzles with the early entries and then posting a killer time after they have all the answers.

Checking out Ebay, there are close to 100 of these cryptex out there already. That's the realist prize.

Net-Neutrality

I try not to post 'call to arms' very often, but this is pretty important.

Save the Internet: Click here

When I first heard that ISPs wanted to charge web sites to allow web users to get to their sites, I thought it was such a crazy bad idea that it would disappear just like those $100 checks to help with gas prices. Lo and behold just the opposite has happened. The cable and phone companies are pushing legislation through Congress.

If the cable and phone companies have their way, you won't be able to get to your favorite sites/blogs unless they pay the phone and cable companies to let you surf there. Don't we all pay enough for internet access already to not get the whole internet? They have to gouge both end of the internet, even though it would kill most of the things we love about the internet? With their plan, we would only get the internet that the cable and phone companies allow or be pushed to their 'preferred customers'. Your favorite sport, news, game, recipe site may be blocked out or slowed down. If your favorite online store doesn't pay up - blocked. Little sites like this one that make up the bulk of the internet, made as creative outlets or ways to share common interests would be blocked. Those little non corporate sites and blogs that we use to get information on hobbies and past-times, favorite artists, even family blogs - blocked.

So please click on the banner above or here and send a note to your Senators and Representative to preserve net neutrality.

There has been some great cartoons and videos that illustrate the absurdity of the whole issue. Here are my favorites:

They Are Made Out Of Meat

Terry Bisson's short story, 'They Are Made Out Of Meat' is (at least to me) a classic. Other life in the universe doesn't necessarily have to be like it is on Earth.

Now it has been made into a short film that has recently won the Grand Prize at the ">Science Fiction Museum's inaugural short film festival. Enjoy the film. It's great.

The Five Most Common Lies in Business

Achieve-IT! referenced an old but relevant piece from Fast Company about the five most common lies in business. For example:

Lie: "We judge people by their performance."
Truth: "I judge your performance based on how much I like you."
B.S. Detector: "Why do most people who keep their jobs keep them?" LaFontaine asks. "Because the people they work for like them. And you get fired when the people you work for don't like you anymore.

No Arlington Classic Criterium This Year

CriteriumBad news. There will be no Arlington Classic Criterium this year. Surprisingly, the event has not been organized by the village in the past, but by local couple Karen and Jim Inman. The Inmans say they need a break this summer from the time intensive event coordination, as they also run two businesses and have two ankle-biters.

Also the village had not allocated the $10,000 they usually contribute to the event in their 2006 budget. Village Manager, Bill Dixon, said that if their was a public outcry, they would look at taking over the event.
