Camping At Home - 50+ Hour Power Outage
Inga said several times during the 50+ hours we went without electricity that it was kind of like camping (except for the hot showers, toilet, nice bed, etc). Well, I've never been camping and any desire I might have had to try, is very very dead.
So we are recovering from the summer storm of 2007. Like way too many people, we lost power around 3:30 - 4 p.m. on Thursday and got it back this evening around 9 p.m., so that's about 53 hours. We had some water in the basement because of the sump pump not having a battery backup (have to move that up the home improvement list). No damage done with the water, except for the carpet tiles I put in my work area. I put carpet tiles down for that reason - figured if we ever got water in the basement, it would be easy to replace the damaged section. The next morning one of the neighbors let us plug into their generator, so the pump got back to work and things dried out.
Come to think of it, there is a causality - the food in the fridge. There was no meat (Inga's a vegetarian and I don't eat meat at home) and I mostly shop for groceries as needed so it's not so bad. I can still here generators in the distance, so there are plenty of people still slogging around in the dark. We're thankful that we got off light and hope everyone gets life back to normal ASAP.
But this storm and outage reminded me how much I love electricity...and the internet...and computers...mp3s...digital photography...etc...etc...etc...
