Arlington's business up slightly from 2010 | Daily Racing Form

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - A year after posting dismal business figures, Arlington Park bounced slightly back with narrow 2011 gains over last year's betting totals.

Average daily all-sources handle at the 85-day meet that began May 6 and concluded Sunday was $3,007,493. That's a 3-percent increase from 2010, when average daily all-sources handle came in at $2,907,844, but if there is a light at the end of the tunnel, it remains dim. The 2011 total average daily figure still is down 25 percent from the $4,003,711 handled in 2009.  The figures were made available by the Illinois Racing Board, as Arlington's owner, Churchill Downs Inc., does not release such information publicly.

The modest gains over 2010 were led by out-of-state handle on Arlington races, which rose 5 percent to $2,292,301 this summer. Bets placed at Arlington on Arlington races fell by 3 percent from last year to an average daily figure of $417,130.

For $6 at Mariano's, you can get a box of some of the hottest peppers in the world.  Naga Jolokia aka ghost peppers, aren't just for extreme eating challenges on TV anymore.  Now you can bring the capsaisin loaded pepper home for your own mouth burning pleasure.

For the next couple of weeks, be wary of offers over eager offers to try someone's special salsa or homemade hot sauce.

Harlan Ellison Says, 'F*ck You, Pay Me' | Film | ChinaShop

One of my favorite authors, Harlan Ellison, is in the news. He's suing to stop the release of the upcoming Justin Timberlake film, In Time, because it based on ideas from one of his most famous works, "Repent Harlequin!, said The Tick Tock Man.

Click above to read ChinaShop's recap of his history of suing to defend his work. Some view Ellison as a sue crazy old man; others as a defender of the value of creative works. I'm in the latter camp. Artist's work is just as valuable as mine or anyone else and should be protected. Unfortunately in the digital age that is less and less the case. Oddly enough it is big companies, who should know better, that are often the offenders.

Collection of Dawn Probe's Initial Vesta Visit

NASA created a real nice video compiling the photos of the Dawn probe's initial visit to the asteroid Vesta. The next set when the probe gets even closer should be unbelievable.

Update on July storm

The Village of Arlington Heights has received notification from the Cook County Department of Homeland Security & Emergency Management that the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) has conducted a review of damage assessment information submitted by municipalities throughout Cook County following the severe storm of July 23, 2011.
It was determined that the damage assessment amount reported in Cook County did not meet the threshold amount needed to generate a submittal for a Federal Disaster Declaration for Cook County.

Without a Federal Declaration of Emergency for Cook County regarding the July 23 storms, residents will not have the opportunity to seek low-interest loans to replace essential items damaged by storm water such as furnaces, water heaters, washers, etc.

The Village appreciates the information received from many residents following the record-breaking storm on July 23, 2011.

As a sidenote to the hearings and such; this note was posted on the village website last week. The July 23rd storm did not reach the disaster criteria.
